Gibraltar’s Military Timeline

Military History Tours in Gibraltar are one of the most popular and on demand tours on our current portfolio.

This is clearly of no surprise, due to the  significance of Gibraltar as a Military Strategic location. This strategic importance can be dated back to the Greek Empire. Such importance is evident as  Gibraltar is described as one of the Pillars of Hercules.

Military presence then become more evident during the Moorish invasion of Europe from 711 AD to the Spanish invasion of the rock on 1462.  Luckily some of the Military Structures are still intact to date.

On our tours you will get to see from first hand all the Moorish Installations, including the Tower of Homage and the Northern Defences which date back to the Moors. There are also Spanish Military Fortifications still intact including the Charles V Wall.

The majority of the Military History emerges from British Occupation from 1704 to date.

The obvious remaining Military Installations are from the 18th Century (Great Siege period) and the both World Wars era. It was during this period that Gibraltar’s military importance was greatly tested by enemies. Gibraltar became home of the Royal Navy and successful military operations were conducted by Allied Forces, including Eisenhower’s US Military Operation onto North Africa.

We will share how all our past military installations enabled Gibraltar to become a impenetrable fortress and then develop as a strategic Military Naval Base.

Our Military History Tours are delivered by qualified official guides. Included on the price is Ticket to the Nature Reserve and  taxi transportation.

Suggestion: why not combine your Military History Tour with a Tour of the Gibraltar Botanical GardensSouth District or Inner City Walking Tours.

Parson's Lodge Battery Tour

The Battery covers the entrance to Rosia Bay, which is Gibraltar’s only natural harbour. Defending this area had been identified as a key element in defending Gibraltar from invasions throughout the years.
The Battery has played key roles in several parts of Gibraltarian history.
Upon looking at the walls in Parson’s Lodge, you can see different types of wall. The Battery has a mix of Moorish, Spanish and different periods of British brickwork, which is a brilliant way of showing the wealth of history that surrounds Parson’s Lodge Battery.
